The legend says that the money to build it came from the profits of the spice trade that is why it was said to be “built of pepper”.

The Porto Commercial Association started the building of the “Palácio da Bolsa”, its headquarters, in 1842. In the course of three generations, many masters and artisans worked towards the setting-up of this architectural jewel of the 19th century, built in the neo-classical style. Classified as a National Monument, the “Palácio da Bolsa”, one of the main symbols and attractions of the city and the region, receives over 200,000 visitors every year. A true reception centre of the region, it is there that most of the State’s official receptions in the North of Portugal are held. Government officials and Dignitaries, from almost every country in the world, have visited the “Palácio da Bolsa”.
