This is an excursion to try your strength against the Arctic winter. We follow the sled track along the gigantic Kangia ice fiord but mid-way turn to enter the smaller Sikuiuitsoq fjord. The track leads onwards to the frozen sea and we travel with the icebergs amongst us. At the end of the fiord you can view the towering "Dead Glacier" in front and this is the setting for tonight's overnight stay, in primitive cabins or tents. On the ride back to Ilulissat we will see, whether the approach to the Inland Ice is passable.
Get the feeling of being where no one else has been before you!! Every year, 24 hours a day, approximately 20 million ton of ice is streaming from the Ilulissat Glacier, into the ice fiord, Kangia. The result is gigantic icebergs, which can be several hundred meters wide and up to 100 meter high above sea level. At the entrance to ice fiord these giants are stranded and we have a unique opportunity to sail among them. This is an incredible experience you simply have to try while visiting Ilulissat in the summer.
Ilulissat – Jakobshavn was founded in 1741 and it is today the third biggest town in Greenland with over 4.500 inhabitants. The guide will tell you about the history of the city, the Greenlandic culture and the modern life 300 km north of the Arctic Circle. We will visit the fishermen at the harbor and the hunters at their trading post “Brædtet”. We will show you the church and the house where the famous explorer Knud Rasmussen was born
The beautiful icebergs of Ilulissat create the wing for the abandoned settlement Sermermiut, which is situated one and a half kilometer south of the city. The different Inuit cultures have lived here during the last 4000 years, and today you can still find artifacts, which witness their presence. Hear the story about the life and the customs of the Greenlanders before the Europeans´ arrival; see the ruins and the kitchen mitten.
On a small rocky island, between jagged mountain peaks and expansive arctic fjords, lies the town of Kulusuk. This spectacular Greenland destination is only a 2 hours flight from Reykjavík, making it the perfect daytour option for those looking to add a whole new world to their holiday! After sailing amongst the huge blocks of ice you'll head towards the majestic Aputsjiak crawling glacier, where the sounds of the glacier breaking into the frozen abyss will leave a lasting impression. The final part of the boat tour takes you to the abandoned villages in Umiivik, making it ever so clear how life fragile life is at this remote destination.
The settlement Oqaatsut (Rodebay) was through several centuries the resort of the Dutch whale hunters, and whales are still drawn ashore here once in a while. Oqaatsut is beautifully situated approx. 15 km. north of Ilulissat, and even though it only has 45 inhabitants it has got its own school, church, shop and a small restaurant called “H8”, which is one of the old buildings from the colonial time.
